输是最后总归要输的
连人带绳都跌过界去
于是游戏终止
——又一场不公平的竟争
但对岸的力量一分神
也会失手，会踏过界来
一双半双留下

紧而不断，久而愈强
究竟是怎样一个对手
踉跄过界之前
谁也未见过

Tug of War with Eternity

Surely I am doomed to lose,
Tripped across the line, man and rope:
So the game ends
----One more round of unfair contest.
But the powerful foot on the other side
Occasionally just may slip
And over the line just may step
To print the miracle
Of just one, even half a footprint.
Yet in the dark no one knows
What's at the other end of the rope
That pulls taut and tough as night goes on
Until one's dragged tottering across.
So under the wind-bestirred stars
Against eternity I hold my ground
All by myself through the night.

搭来搭去，依然是方块的积木

Building Blocks

How amazing to find, now the poem's written,
The rain has stopped all of a sudden!
They must have all be asleep, the world below.
I'm all alone up in the tower,
Lofty solitude is ultimate.
The passage of twenty years
Finds me still playing poetry,
A game of building blocks with words.
But such a game is too sad,
Played only by oneself,
When childhood playmates have grown mature
And would no longer share
A game that never grows old.
Ultimately loneliness is all my own
And twenty years find me still in the game,
Still convinced such blocks,
If built solid enough and tall,
Would one day so steadfast stand
No foul play could ever upset:
Nothing is ever as steady
as towering solitude.

The Power Failure

Suddenly, in silence comes the monster
And, with one lick of its black tongue
Snatches the heart of civilized West.
So gone is the sick heart of America:
Hushed and dead lie all the engines;
Paralyzed, the elevators and the subway;
Blinded, all the traffic and neon lights.
Where on earth on you, New York?
The stunned angels cry amid the stars.

For twenty-five hours raves the Dark Age.
Plunder, you Vandals and Goths!
All dark alleys lead to Rome.
Plunder! Not for hunger but for gain,
Not black and white TV but color one.
And all amid the doomsday din,
Who are passing candles in the square
--- unmistakable flickering of light,
so kind yet so frail like lost ancient rite?

Sense of Security

The land is old and sprawling, yet the climate
Is still wayward and wild.
From the typhoon that turns and turns
And with it five thousand years
Of nightmares and fitful naps
No single corner is secure
Save in the center of the threat
----The typhoon's eye, blue and fair,
Lashed on all sides by the storm.
In our time every mind
Is an exception of its kind.
Let whoever tries to rise
Above the lightening and the thunder
Reach himself far and out
Into the commotion of the skies
Where only the elements rule.
In our time every pen
That stays straight is a special pen.
Every lightning rod is sure
None dies of war who goes to war.
